Local Businesses Warned of Scammers Posing as HMRC

26 February 2024 by Andover Business Reporter

Fraudsters, masquerading as representatives from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), are using the mobile number 07701 407151 to contact unsuspecting businesses.

The scam involves the callers demanding immediate payment of alleged unpaid taxes, threatening legal action if their demands are not met.

Authorities have issued an urgent warning to all business owners, advising them to exercise extreme caution if they receive any calls from this number. It’s important to note that HMRC does not make direct phone calls using mobile numbers for matters relating to taxes or penalties and certainly does not demand immediate payments over the phone.

Victims of the scam have reported various tactics used by the callers to instil fear and urgency, including threats of arrest, public shaming, and severe financial penalties. These tactics are designed to pressure victims into making rash decisions, leading to financial losses.

Experts are advising anyone who receives a call from the number in question to not provide any personal or financial information. Instead, they should end the call immediately and report the incident to the official HMRC phishing team and Action Fraud. It’s crucial to remember that legitimate entities like HMRC will always provide taxpayers with the right to question or appeal any amounts said to be owed and will communicate through official channels, including letters and secure emails.

Business owners are encouraged to educate their staff on recognising such scams and to implement strict protocols for handling unsolicited calls claiming to be from HMRC or any other official body. Awareness and education are key to combating these fraudulent activities.

For anyone affected or in need of advice, further resources and support are available through official HMRC channels and cybersecurity advisory services.

For immediate support and to report suspicious activity, contact HMRC directly via the .GOV website.
